Arab League chief calls for global action against West Bank annexation plans

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy urged Arab and international efforts to oppose plans to annex the West Bank during a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Fahmy also called for action against settlement expansion, displacement, land confiscation and the isolation of Palestinian cities, while reaffirming support for a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
TEHRAN — Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has called for Arab and international efforts to prevent plans to annex the West Bank, stressing opposition to any attempt to alter the geographic and demographic character of Palestinian territories.
Fahmy made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the Arab League headquarters on Wednesday. The two discussed the latest developments concerning the Palestinian issue, as well as the political, humanitarian and security challenges facing the Palestinians.
According to the report, Fahmy said confronting what he described as dangerous and unacceptable plans was an Arab and international responsibility, as well as a duty for all supporters of a two-state solution.
He called for intensified efforts and an appeal to the international conscience to stop Israeli plans for the annexation of the West Bank, which he said included expanding settlements, displacing Palestinians, confiscating land, blockading Palestinian cities and isolating them.
Fahmy reaffirmed that the Palestinian issue remains central to the Arab League and told Abbas that the organization would work to turn that commitment into practical action in the next phase.
He also said the coming period required serious action to achieve a final and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue in all its dimensions.
Abbas had previously met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for consultations, according to the report.
