Iranian Ambassador to Russia Outlines “Realist Idealism” as Foreign-Policy Doctrine
In a commentary for IRNA, the ambassador links revolutionary principles with international realities and highlights Iran’s ties with emerging powers, including Russia.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia argues in an IRNA commentary that “realist idealism”—a combination of revolutionary principles and international realities—should remain the country’s foreign-policy framework. The piece highlights the principles of dignity, wisdom and expediency, domestic capabilities, relations with Russia and other emerging powers, support for the Axis of Resistance, and public diplomacy. It also says the approach will continue under the leadership identified in the commentary as Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
TEHRAN — Iran’s ambassador to Russia has described “realist idealism” as the guiding paradigm of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy, arguing that it combines the ideals of the Islamic Revolution with the realities of the international system.
In an exclusive commentary published by the Islamic Republic News Agency, the ambassador said the approach had been developed under the leadership of the late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei and was reflected in the foreign policy principles of “dignity, wisdom and expediency.”
The commentary argues that Iran’s foreign-policy strategy places particular emphasis on domestic strength, reliance on national capabilities and the reinforcement of public confidence. It presents these elements as foundations for national security, the protection of sovereignty and the expansion of Iran’s regional and international standing.
The ambassador also points to the development of strategic relations with emerging and independent powers, including what the commentary calls the deepening of comprehensive ties with Russia. It further identifies support for the “Axis of Resistance” and engagement with global public opinion as key components of Iran’s foreign-policy outlook.
According to the commentary, Iran’s public diplomacy seeks to emphasize human dignity while challenging what it describes as Western double standards. The ambassador argues that this approach has strengthened Iran’s presence in international discourse and contributed to efforts to promote a more multipolar global order.
The piece portrays the late leader’s death as a continuation, rather than an interruption, of Iran’s strategic direction. It says that under the leadership of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, identified in the commentary as the new leader of the revolution, the doctrine of “realist idealism” will continue to guide the country’s foreign policy.
The commentary was published by IRNA on July 6, 2026, and is attributed to Iran’s ambassador to Russia. It presents the ambassador’s political assessment and does not independently substantiate the broader claims about Iran’s influence or changes in the international order.
