The body of a newborn baby has been discovered on a shoreline near Siliwen Road in Bangor, North Wales Police said.
The infant was found by a member of the public shortly before 5pm on Sunday. Police are carrying out searches to trace the baby’s mother and have appealed to her, the father and anyone who may have information to come forward.
Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women’s services for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said the mother may be extremely vulnerable and urged her to seek medical attention and support.
“We don’t yet know all the circumstances surrounding your baby’s death,” she said, adding that the immediate priority was to find the mother and ensure she was safe and received any support she needed.
Detective Sergeant Kelly Wynne said police were concerned the mother might not be able to seek help. The force asked anyone who knew of a woman or girl who may have been pregnant, or whose behaviour had changed unusually in recent months, to contact officers.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place on Wednesday.
