Five British men arrested over a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford have been released on police bail, the Press Association reports.
The men, aged between 23 and 25 and from London, were arrested on Sunday after three suspicious vans were found near the Gloucestershire airbase, which is used by the US Air Force. Police said the material found was not viable explosives, but stressed that the investigation was continuing.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, said officers were keeping an open mind about whether proxies may have been acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state. He said the men remained under investigation and were subject to conditions on their movement and contact with others.
Iran’s London embassy has rejected what it called speculation about Iranian involvement. US President Donald Trump previously said the suspects had been looking to “do big damage” to the base.
