Sudan’s army says it captured new areas in North Kordofan
Summary

Sudan’s army said it and allied forces captured Abu Qaud, Umm Samima and Mount Abu Sanoun in North Kordofan after fighting with the RSF. The army said operations were continuing and aimed in part at reopening the El Obeid–Dilling road. The UN has warned of escalating drone attacks and a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

Sudan’s army said it had captured several areas in North Kordofan state after days of fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to a report by Iran’s IRNA, citing Sudan Tribune, the army and allied joint forces took control of Abu Qaud, Umm Samima, Mount Abu Sanoun and surrounding areas after heavy battles.

The army said military operations were continuing to pursue remaining RSF fighters, expand its control and secure the recaptured areas. A spokesman for the army’s special operations forces said the campaign in the Kordofan axis was ongoing and that forces were working to reopen the El Obeid–Dilling road in a future phase.

The reported advance came as part of a broader military campaign in North Kordofan. The army and joint forces have also announced that they control 11 areas near Sodiri. Military sources said the operations were intended to strengthen the army’s positions and cut RSF supply lines.

The United Nations warned on 12 May of intensifying drone attacks in Kordofan, saying the attacks had killed at least 880 civilians between January and April. North, West and South Kordofan have experienced escalating fighting between Sudan’s army and the RSF since 25 October 2025.

Sudan has been embroiled in war between the army and the RSF since April 2023. The United Nations estimates that the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced about 13 million and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.
