The body of a newborn baby has been discovered on a shoreline near Bangor in Wales, police said, prompting an appeal for the infant’s mother and anyone with information to come forward.
The baby was found by a member of the public near the Siliwen Road area shortly before 5pm on Sunday, according to a North Wales Police spokesman. Searches were continuing to trace the mother.
In an appeal released by the force, Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women’s services for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said authorities were particularly concerned about the mother’s health and wellbeing.
“We recognise that she is likely to be extremely vulnerable,” Ms Giraud said. “She may be fearful of seeking the support she needs through fear of identifying herself.”
She made a direct appeal to the mother to contact healthcare professionals, approach a police officer or attend a police station.
“Our immediate concern is for your health, safety and wellbeing,” Ms Giraud said. “We recognise that you may be feeling frightened, overwhelmed or unsure about what to do next.”
She added that the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death were not yet known, but said it was important to find the mother, establish that she was safe and ensure she received any medical attention and support she might need.
Detective Sergeant Kelly Wynne said police were also appealing to the baby’s father and to anyone who might have relevant information, including friends, family members, neighbours and colleagues.
“If you have any information regarding a woman or girl you think may have been pregnant or whose behaviour has been unusual or out of character over the past few months, including withdrawing from friends, family or social ties, please contact us,” she said.
Police said that coming forward could be difficult, but urged people not to remain silent. Detective Sergeant Wynne said all names provided would be treated with the utmost discretion and could be eliminated as the mother without delay.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place on Wednesday. The available evidence does not state the cause or circumstances of the baby’s death.
