BBC director-general Matt Brittin said AI will not replace human creators, while confirming the BBC plans to experiment with AI-generated presentations within safeguards. He also discussed the corporation’s financial difficulties and planned job cuts.
BBC director-general Matt Brittin said artificial intelligence will not replace human creators, despite recently watching what he described as a “pretty good” AI-generated 50-minute episode of Doctor Who.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society’s London convention, Brittin said AI tools were allowing billions of people to create content at a standard comparable to a Hollywood studio. He also said the BBC would experiment with AI presenting future programmes “within guardrails”.
Brittin also addressed the BBC’s financial difficulties. The corporation expects around 2,000 job cuts as part of savings plans, including £160 million of savings across its news, nations and content divisions. He said the BBC’s funding mechanism needed to change as it faced financial uncertainty.
