Bahrainis Protest Detention and Trials of Shiite Clerics
Reports say Bahrainis protested in Diraz against the detention and trial of Shiite clerics, amid broader allegations of arrests and restrictions affecting the Shiite community.
Residents reportedly held a protest in Diraz, near Manama, condemning the continued detention and trial of Shiite clerics. The demonstration followed a similar protest in Sitra. Reports cited by Iranian state media said dozens of clerics remain on trial, with the latest hearing lasting 13 hours and involving testimony by video link. The reports also described recent arrests, questioning of religious figures and restrictions on Shiite religious ceremonies. Bahraini political groups and human rights activists have called for the detainees’ release and an end to arbitrary arrests and religious restrictions.
