Atomic Energy Chief Meets Family of Slain Nuclear Scientist Fereydoun Abbasi

TEHRAN — Mohammad Eslami, Iran’s vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, visited the home of slain nuclear scientist and former agency chief Fereydoun Abbasi during Government Week, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.

Eslami was accompanied by a group of senior managers from Iran’s nuclear industry. During the meeting, he paid tribute to Abbasi’s scientific standing, professional service and contributions as a veteran university professor and prominent figure in Iran’s nuclear sector.

Recalling his close familiarity with Abbasi’s character, Eslami said the scientist had been deeply committed to Iran’s progress, dignity and national strength. He also emphasized Abbasi’s focus on scientific and technological development and on achieving national independence and capabilities.

Eslami described Abbasi’s scientific, managerial and technical work as an enduring part of the history of Iran’s nuclear industry. He highlighted Abbasi’s role in advancing the country’s nuclear knowledge and in strengthening scientific and industrial fields, as well as his efforts to expand Iran’s research, scientific and industrial capacities while serving as head of the Atomic Energy Organization.

Members of Abbasi’s family thanked Eslami and the accompanying officials for their visit and shared memories of his ethical qualities, scientific outlook and personal character. They also spoke about his resilience and stressed the importance of continuing what they described as his scientific and national goals.

Abbasi’s wife recalled his emphasis on national development, modern technologies and the peaceful advancement of nuclear technology. She said he regarded scientific progress as a foundation of Iran’s dignity and national strength. She also underlined his views on resisting adversaries, preserving the country’s dignity and capabilities, and continuing efforts toward Iran’s progress and development.

Fereydoun Abbasi was a university professor, scientist and longtime manager in Iran’s nuclear sector. According to IRNA, he held important responsibilities in the field over the course of his scientific, research and managerial career and played a significant role in the development of Iran’s nuclear knowledge and industry.

IRNA reported that Abbasi was killed at dawn on June 13, 2025, during what it described as an Israeli attack on Iranian territory. The visit to his family was presented as an occasion to commemorate his legacy and reaffirm the importance of scientific and technological development in Iran’s nuclear program.
