South Korean president rules out military deployment to Strait of Hormuz war

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ruled out deployments that would involve participation in or intervention in a war in the Strait of Hormuz, while supporting limited measures to protect shipping and South Korean citizens.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Friday that Seoul would not deploy troops or military equipment to the Strait of Hormuz if doing so involved participation in or intervention in a war. He said South Korea would consider limited measures to protect commercial vessels, oil transport routes and its citizens. Lee added that the Cheonghae Unit remains deployed and that Seoul is assessing ways to strengthen its capabilities. South Korea’s defense ministry recently announced that it had sent a team to assess regional security conditions, while denying reports that Washington had requested the deployment of military equipment to the waterway.
