Qanbari: Basis of U.S. Sanctions on Iran Has Changed
Iranian deputy foreign minister says activities in certain sectors may now themselves support new designations
Hamid Qanbari said the basis for some U.S. sanctions has broadened, making new designations easier, but not automatic. He urged coordinated monitoring and greater use of Iran’s free zones to mitigate sanctions effects.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Qanbari said recent U.S. sanctions target sectors including transport, gold, digital assets, aviation and technology. He said activity in some of these areas could now be used as a basis for sanctioning individuals and entities, while stressing that participants are not automatically sanctioned and must still be specifically designated. Qanbari also called for stronger sanctions monitoring and greater use of the capacity of Iran’s free zones to reduce economic pressure.
