Iranian debate weighs negotiation against confrontation with the U.S.
IRNA reported a debate between Mohsen Baharvand and Foad Izadi over negotiation, deterrence and Iran’s approach to the United States.
A televised IRNA discussion featured former Iranian diplomat Mohsen Baharvand and academic Foad Izadi debating whether negotiation can advance Iran’s interests. Baharvand described negotiation as a tool to be used when appropriate, while Izadi argued that it has produced no results and warned of potential U.S. attacks if talks continue. Both said Iran’s defensive capabilities have strengthened its position, but disagreed over whether this creates diplomatic opportunities.
