Iran has called for the suspension of U.S. membership on the IAEA Board of Governors, alleging that U.S. actions against Iran conflict with the agency’s statutory principles and undermine the board’s impartiality.
Iranian officials have rejected the United States’ selection for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors, arguing that Washington’s alleged attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities make its membership incompatible with the agency’s statute. In a statement at the IAEA’s 70th General Conference, Iran said U.S. participation created a structural conflict of interest and undermined the board’s impartiality. The Iranian delegation called for the suspension of U.S. membership under Article 19 of the statute and said the decision should not be attributed to Iran.
