Iran and Russia Discuss Nuclear Cooperation, Small Reactors

Rosatom says Iran and Russia discussed nuclear cooperation, including proposed small modular reactors and maintenance at the Bushehr plant. No timeline or final construction contract was reported.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed expanding nuclear cooperation and the status of Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant during a meeting in Bishkek, according to Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachev, as reported by Iranian and Russian state media.
Likhachev said Russia had submitted a draft intergovernmental agreement for the construction of small nuclear power plants in Iran. He also said planned maintenance and fuel replacement at Bushehr’s first unit would begin in mid-September, while construction of the plant’s second and third units continues.
The reports did not provide a timeline or final contract for the proposed small modular reactors.
