Tens of thousands of people marched in Madrid after the eviction of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal from an apartment where she had lived for decades, the Associated Press reported. Protesters camped overnight in the Puerta del Sol plaza and demanded stronger tenant protections, anti-fraud rules and a ban on evictions without alternative housing. The Tenants’ Union said it would remain in the square at least until a cabinet meeting next Tuesday, when Spain’s government is expected to announce new measures. The demonstrations come as rising housing costs and a shortage of homes place growing pressure on renters across Spain.
