Rail link via the Syunik region could widen regional transit and grant Armenia access to southern seas
Armenia’s ambassador in Iran urged stronger rail and trade ties with Iran, highlighting a planned rail link via Syunik to boost regional transit and Armenia's access to southern seas and Europe via the North–South Corridor.
In Tehran, Armenian Ambassador Grigor Hakobyan told IRNA that Iran's railway sector plays a key role in linking landlocked CIS states to international routes and that bilateral rail and trade ties between Iran and Armenia should be expanded. The report, citing Iran's Railways, notes that connecting Iran and Armenia's rail networks would give Armenia access to open seas to the south and would diversify Iran's routes to Europe. During a meeting with Jabbar Ali Zakri, the CEO of Iran's Railways, Hakobyan was quoted as underscoring the need to deepen rail cooperation and to increase Armenia's participation in regional transit, particularly within the North–South Corridor. The two sides described the project to connect Iran and Armenia's rail networks via the Syunik region as one of the infrastructural priorities pursued to boost regional trade and transit, with Tehran and Yerevan actively working to operationalize the route.
